Now you will be able to change your mobile service provider across India

Written by Punit

TRAI Amends, now mobile users will be able to port their numbers anywhere in the country while changing service providers from May 3 . Mobile Number Portability (MNP) currently allows consumers to change their service provider while retaining the same number only within a telecom circle, which in most cases, is limited to a State.

A person, for instance, while shifting from one telecom cricle to another telecom circle will be able to retain the same mobile number while selecting a service provider. In a statement today, Trai said –

It has issued sixth amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2009, which will facilitate full Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in the country, with effect from May 3, 2015.

At present, you have to pay roaming charges if you use your number outside your home city. Also, you will be billed on STD rates for the calls. A full MNP will help you do away with these charges as your new city becomes your home base without any change in the phone number.

Over 3.49 million opted for the limited MNP facility in December, taking the cumulative MNP requests to 142.98 million at the end of 2014, as per the data released by the telecom regulator.
