Following its debut at the Mobile World Congress at the start of this week the Honor Magic5 Pro enters our office and joins our review queue.

So let’s get an unboxing done, then we’ll talk a bit about this powerful smartphone. Honor packages the Magic5 Pro with a case, a 66W charger, and a cable. Our unit is the Meadow Green one.

The Honor Magic5 Pro is a striking device. The corners of its front glass are contoured and taper down at the sides. It creates a smooth and curved look and feel to the phone.

Then on the back, the panel rises gently to meet the camera island, creating a subtle bulge that catches the eye. The back is also textured, which will please some and bug others.

Upfront, the Magic5 Pro has a gorgeous 6.81-inch 1312x2848px AMOLED panel with 120Hz variable refresh rate, 1800 nits of peak brightness, and a dual punch-hole, which fits a 12MP ultrawide selfie camera, and a ToF 3D sensor for both depth reading, and biometric unlocking.

Honor is serious about the Magic5 Pro’s camera performance. It comes with a 50MP 23mm main camera with a custom 1/1.12-inch sensor. It has large 1.4µm pre-binned pixels. Those increase to 2.8µm after binning at 12MP, which are not that much smaller than the 3.2µm binned pixels of a 1 inch-type sensors.

There are two more 50MP cameras – a 13mm ultrawide unit with autofocus and 2.5cm macro capabilities as well as a 90mm periscope telephoto camera that can go all the way up to 100x digitally.

The Magic5 Pro is capable of some serious phone photography. It even topped DxOMark’s smartphone rankings.
