On World Environment Day, June 5th, a conference themed “Green Freight, Carbon Future” was held in Nanjing by the logistics industry. Full Truck Alliance, a leading digital freight platform in China, unveiled an upgraded “Manyun Carbon Road Plan” double carbon strategy and officially reached a strategic cooperation in the field of double carbon with the well-known university, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. They also announced the official launch of a blockchain-based carbon footprint management platform for road logistics and an important achievement in the form of the “first driver carbon account system in China’s freight industry”.The first batch of “carbon accounts” will be initially opened to 3,000 truck drivers nationwide.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the transportation industry is one of the world’s top greenhouse gas-emitting industries, accounting for 25% of carbon emissions. The International Road Federation (IRF) predicts that global energy consumption for transportation and logistics will increase by 21%-25% from 2016 to 2050.

Transportation accounts for 10.4% of China’s carbon emissions, of which road transportation is responsible for over 80%, including over 60% from road freight transportation. The challenge of carbon emissions is most significant for heavy-duty trucks, which account for over 85% of the road freight transportation industry’s carbon emissions.

Road logistics are crucial to achieving China’s “peak carbon and carbon neutrality” goal in the transportation sector. The World Resources Institute (WRI) suggests that optimizing transportation demand for road freight, shortening transportation distances, and improving logistics relationships are critical. Reasonable logistics route planning can reduce transportation distance, driving activities, peak traffic volume, improve road safety, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As a digital freight platform, Full Truck Alliance president Guo Langbo said it was essential to develop a “double carbon” strategy. In 2020, the company began exploring such measures and established a model for reducing the “three empties” (empty vehicle, container, and trip). A 2022 collaboration with the China Classification Society resulted in the creation of China’s first carbon reduction standard for road freight cargo. In June 2022, Full Truck Alliance launched the “Manyun Carbon Road Plan” to reduce carbon emissions by establishing a carbon emission management platform, asset development, and carbon trading accounting system and engage with platform drivers to build a carbon-inclusive platform.

According to Full Truck Alliance‘s calculations, as of 2022, nearly 10 million truck drivers have completed transport turnovers of billions of tons of kilometers on the Manbang platform, with a cumulative carbon emission reduction of 12 million tons, which is equivalent to saving more than 4.6 billion liters of diesel fuel for drivers.
