Wouldn’t it be nice, if Facebook consumed less internet data ? And yes, to do so, Facebook has been working on a lighter version of its mobile app, and has even pushed it silently in the Android Playstore.
According to Facebook, this Lite version uses less data and works in all network conditions.
Its sizes around 252kb, quick to load, data-efficient, preferably designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity. And indeed really battery efficient. Supports devices with Android 2.2 and above.
It has been downloaded around 10,000 times on the playstore since January 20, 2015. It has some limited features as that of original mobile app like missing stickers for chat and comments. Earlier also, there was a lite version of Facebook available for desktop. (lite.facebook.com)
Facebook Lite app is currently available in some countries like Nepal, Nigeria, Bangladesh, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Zimbabwe.
It may be released to other countries as well, and may it also arrive on other operating systems like Windows Phone, iOS. We’ll update, as soon as we hear more.
