Asus ROG Ally makes Geekbench debut with a Radeon 780M GPU and a custom AMD CPU

While Asus is yet to announce the price and availability of its first-ever handheld gaming console, a slew of leaks have revealed quite a bit about it. Among other things, the Asus ROG Ally will feature a custom-designed AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, which appears to be a modified version of the Phoenix-based Ryzen 7 7840U. A recent Geekbench listing confirms said speculation and sheds some light on its performance.

The Asus ROG Ally scores 35,498 in Geekbench’s OpenCL benchmark. A cursory glance at some Geekbench listings suggests it performs more or less on par with other Radeon 780M GPUs. If a previous leak is anything to go by, one can expect to see GTX 1650 Max-Q levels of performance from the handheld. This should put it well ahead of the Steam Deck and even similarly-specced competitors from GPD.

Geekbench also reveals the Asus ROG Ally’s CPU boost clock. It is set at 5.0 GHz, which is impressive for a 15 Watt chip. Then again, it will require all the computing power it can get to run its FHD screen at 120 FPS, and it’ll be interesting to see what tricks AMD and Asus have up their sleeve to wring more performance out of the handheld. Lastly, the listing also confirms the Asus ROG Ally can run Windows 11. Whether or not the console will run Windows out of the box remains to be seen.
