Currently, there are two different versions of Skype for Windows 8. Once is Skype App for Windows 8 (touch based as a metro app) and another is its desktop version stand-alone program.
Skype announced that it is dropping its “modern” Windows 8 version Skype and Windows will have only one version running, and its the desktop version. But if you liked the “modern theme”, there is a good news for you that, Skype will be adding touch support and redesigning the interface for its desktop version.
The metro Skype app had some limitations like not able to share screen with other Skype users. So from 8th July onwards, Skype app will redirect you to download the desktop version or open it directly if already installed.
Skype’s Head of Desktop Product Marketing said that – With the upcoming release of Windows 10 for PCs, it makes sense to use the Skype application optimized for mouse and keyboards use, capable of doing touch as well rather than 2 separate applications performing the same function
